Karad, a town in western Maharashtra is situated along the banks of two rivers, Krishna and Koyna. Karad, originally named Karhatak has its significance because of the wide "Y" (180 degrees) shaped confluence of these two rivers.
On the banks of Krishna river , is situated the temple of Devi Krishnamai and on the banks of Koyna river is situated the temple of Devi Koynamai.Karad, in ancient history was under the rule of Aundh Sansthan.
Karad is centrally located in western Maharashtra region with about 2 hours journey from Kolhapur, Sangli, 1 hour from Satara. 3.5 hours from Pune and 4 hours from Sholapur.
Besides being called as the cultural city after Pune, it also is the center stage for education. Karad also takes the pride as the hometown of Maharashtra state's first Chief Minister, Mr. Yashwantrao B. Chavan. A memorial , surrounded by a beautiful park has been built on the banks of Krishna river to commemorate this great leader.
Being located in the heart of sugar belt and co-operative movement, Karad has been a commercial center since the ancient times. The city is hometown of late Shree Y. B. Chavan, the architect of modern Maharashtra. Karad has been an educational center of repute having Government professional colleges offering graduate amd post graduate courses.
